Abstract

This paper studies the role of Waqf, an Islamic economic institution, in bridging the investment gap for sustainable development in Bangladesh. This study is mainly a qualitative research based on secondary data that analyzed laws, policy and strategy papers, research articles, books, newspapers and Internet sources. Our study shows that Waqf can play a pivotal role in bridging the financing gap needed for SDGs. Our research indicates that there are number of innovative Waqf development models which can contribute to the development of education, healthcare, social welfare, public utilities and infrastructure facilities. However, a large portion of Waqf assets remain inactive and illegally occupied by various vested interest group.  Revival of Waqf administration is important in order to realize the immense potentials of this innovative Islamic social financing tool.
